This setting of the Collect for Advent Sunday from the Book of Common Prayer (1662) is based on a Gregorian Chant dating back to at least the 12th Century, known as "Veni redemptor gentium" and used for Ambrose of Milan's Advent Latin Hymn "Intende qui regis Israel". Martin Luther took the second verse of this hymn, with the chant melody, and published the Advent hymn "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland" in 1524. Many composers have used this Chorale melody since, including Buxtehude, Bach, Telemann, Reger, and Distler.
This setting was composed by Ian Wright for Wigton Choral Society's Advent Concert, 2013.
